How it works

  1. 1

    1. Enter the course title and upload teaching materials

Select the textbook manuscript type, write down the title of the book, and upload your lecture notes, papers (PDF), reading lists (BibTeX or RIS), Word documents, Markdown files, or TXT notes as source material—or import an existing draft in Word (.docx), LaTeX (.tex or .zip), Markdown (.md), PDF (including scanned PDFs), or DRM-free EPUB (EPUB 2/3) at /books/new?mode=import.

  2. 2

    2. Review and confirm the course-sequenced outline

The workspace proposes an outline with each chapter's aim, its sections, and how chapters build across the course based on your materials. Rename, reorder, add, or remove chapters until the sequence matches your syllabus, then confirm to start drafting.

  3. 3

    3. Generate chapters and pedagogical apparatus in the background

Chapters are written in order in the background using verified citations from scholarly indexes and your uploaded notes, and an email notification is sent when the draft is complete. Each chapter is paired with learning objectives, a summary, key terms, exercises with reference answers, a case study, and further reading drawn strictly from the chapter text and cited works.

  4. 4

    4. Audit citations, revise in the editor, and export

Revise paragraph by paragraph in the editor, run the whole-book check and citation audit, and generate the week-by-week syllabus and course slides. Export the finished textbook manuscript on a paid plan as a Word (.docx) package, a LaTeX package, an EPUB 3 ebook, or a PDF.

What the workspace provides

Complete chapter apparatus derived strictly from the chapter text

Every textbook chapter includes structured pedagogical components generated from the chapter's own body text rather than invented from outside: 4–6 learning objectives, a chapter summary with 4–7 key points, and 8–15 key terms with definitions. Each chapter also includes a 3–5 paragraph case study followed by 2–3 discussion questions, plus 4–8 further reading entries selected only from the literature cited in the book.

Graded exercises with reference answers

Each chapter provides 6–10 exercises arranged in pedagogical sequence: recall questions come first, followed by application and analysis problems, and concluding with one open-ended question. Reference answers are generated alongside the exercises so instructors can prepare problem sets and grading guides simultaneously.

16-week course syllabus and lecture slides

Beyond the manuscript itself, the AI textbook writer produces a week-by-week course syllabus organized around your chapters—defaulting to a 16-week table covering Week, Topic, Chapters, and Activities & Assignments—and generates accompanying course slides.

Grounded in your lecture notes and real scholarly literature

When drafting chapters, SciVolume cites only works that exist in the scholarly indexes or in the materials you uploaded. Paragraphs built from your lecture notes or papers carry a source mark so you can read the draft and your original material side by side, and the citation audit checks every reference against its source passage to report whether it is supported, not mentioned, or contradicted.

Consistent terminology, numbering, and citation styles

Once the textbook glossary is settled, terminology remains uniform across all chapters, and figure, table, and equation numbers update automatically if you reorder chapters. Citation styles—APA, Chicago (author-date and notes), MLA, Harvard, IEEE, Nature, and GB/T 7714 (numeric and author-date)—can be switched without breaking references.

Who it is for

Undergraduate and graduate course textbooks

For university faculty turning years of lecture notes, slides, and reading lists into a structured textbook with chapter objectives, graded problem sets, and a 16-week syllabus.

Seminar and interdisciplinary course readers

For instructors teaching specialized or emerging courses where no single textbook covers the syllabus, allowing disparate papers and lecture notes to be unified into a coherent manuscript with verified citations.

Professional training and certification textbooks

For technical educators and institutional instructors developing structured training books that require chapter summaries, defined terminology, case studies with discussion questions, and exercises with reference answers.

Translated course editions

For authors and departments adapting an existing textbook into Chinese, English, Japanese, German, French, or Spanish as a paragraph-aligned translated edition with equations, figures, and citations preserved in place.

Formats and limits

Supported

Supported inputs, outputs, and apparatus

  • Reference material uploads: PDF papers, lecture notes, BibTeX/RIS bibliographies, Word (.docx), Markdown (.md), and TXT files.
  • Import of existing manuscripts: Word (.docx), LaTeX (.tex, or a multi-file .zip project with \input/\include automatically expanded and .bib bibliography files automatically imported), Markdown (.md), PDF (direct text reading when a text layer is present; scanned PDFs recognized page by page by AI), and EPUB (DRM-free EPUB 2/3, split into chapters by the ebook's built-in table of contents) via /books/new?mode=import. Single files up to 60 MB and manuscripts up to 3,000,000 characters (longer works prompt for splitting); imported outlines and chapters are recognized automatically and can be adjusted when confirming the outline.
  • Import limitations: PDF running headers/footers, footnotes, images, and complex equations may need cleanup after import; images in PDF and EPUB files are not imported with the text and must be added back in the editor.
  • Export formats: Word (.docx package), LaTeX package, EPUB 3 ebook (usable for Apple Books, uploading to Kindle/KDP, etc., with figures and equations packaged with the book and inline citations linked to the back-of-book bibliography), and PDF (exported via print layout). Exporting requires a paid plan.
  • Citation styles: APA, Chicago (author-date and notes), MLA, Harvard, IEEE, Nature, and GB/T 7714 (numeric and author-date).
  • Languages (6 total): Chinese, English, Japanese, German, French, and Spanish.
  • Privacy: Your manuscripts and course materials are used only for your own project and are never used to train public models.

Not supported

Not supported

  • No fictional or children's books: SciVolume is built exclusively for serious nonfiction (textbooks, monographs, handbooks, popular science, dissertation revisions, and translated editions); it does not write fiction or children's picture books.
  • No unverified or fabricated further reading: Chapter apparatus is generated strictly from the chapter body text, and the 4–8 further reading items per chapter are selected only from works actually cited in the book.
  • No free manuscript creation or export: Creating or exporting a textbook manuscript requires a paid plan (free accounts can read the public sample book but cannot create manuscripts).
  • No DRM-protected ebooks or fixed PDF layout preservation: Ebooks with DRM protection cannot be imported, and importing a PDF manuscript does not preserve the original PDF's page layout (and images from PDF or EPUB files must be re-added in the editor).

Pricing and credits

Creating a new textbook manuscript requires a paid plan. Monthly credits are valid for 30 days, and additional credit packs can be purchased as needed.

PlanMonthly billingAnnual billingMonthly credits (30-day validity)Active manuscriptsTranslation
Free$0—00 (read sample book only)No
Scholar$20/month$120/year5001Yes
Pro$50/month$300/year2,0005Yes
Studio$150/month$900/year7,00020Yes

Credit rules and estimation example:

  • Text generation is billed by the number of characters generated by the model at 10 credits per 1,000 characters.
  • Estimation example: Generating 100,000 characters of textbook prose and chapter apparatus uses approximately 1,000 credits. This is an estimate calculated from the character billing rule, not a fixed price quote.
  • Generating outlines, glossaries, syllabi, and revisions also consumes text generation credits at the same rate; generating figures costs 20 credits per image.

Questions authors ask

How do I write a textbook with AI using my own lecture notes?+

Start a new manuscript, select the textbook type, enter the course title, and upload your lecture notes, papers (PDF), Word files, Markdown notes, or BibTeX/RIS references. SciVolume drafts a course-aligned chapter outline from your materials; once you confirm the outline, it writes each chapter in the background and attaches source marks to paragraphs drawn from your uploaded notes.

What pedagogical sections does the AI textbook generator create for each chapter?+

Based strictly on the chapter's body text, each chapter includes: 4–6 learning objectives; a chapter summary with 4–7 key points; 8–15 key terms and definitions; 6–10 exercises (ordered from recall questions to application and analysis, ending with an open-ended question) with reference answers; a 3–5 paragraph case study with 2–3 discussion questions; and 4–8 further reading items chosen exclusively from works cited in the book.

Will the AI textbook writer invent citations or further reading lists?+

No. During chapter drafting, the workspace searches the scholarly indexes and cites only real works found there or in your uploaded materials. The 4–8 further reading items at the end of each chapter are selected strictly from the literature cited in the book, and the citation audit compares every citation against its source text.

Can it generate a course syllabus and slides from the textbook?+

Yes. SciVolume generates a week-by-week course syllabus organized around the book's chapters—defaulting to a 16-week table with columns for Week, Topic, Chapters, and Activities & Assignments—and can also produce accompanying course slides.

Which export formats and citation styles are supported for textbooks?+

On a paid plan, you can export the completed textbook manuscript as a Word (.docx) package, a LaTeX package, an EPUB 3 ebook (ready for Apple Books, uploading to Kindle/KDP, etc., with figures and equations packaged and inline citations linked to the back-of-book bibliography), or a PDF (via print layout). Supported citation styles include APA, Chicago (author-date and notes), MLA, Harvard, IEEE, Nature, and GB/T 7714 (numeric and author-date).

Can I translate my textbook into another language?+

Yes. Paid plans include whole-book translation across six languages: Chinese, English, Japanese, German, French, and Spanish. The translated edition is created as a separate, paragraph-aligned manuscript after you confirm the glossary, with equations, figures, and citations kept in place.

Can I try the AI textbook generator on a free account?+

Free accounts include 0 active manuscripts and are limited to reading the public sample book at /demo (no login required). To create a textbook outline and draft chapters, you need a paid plan starting with Scholar at $20/month ($120/year).
